Carol Jewel - Jazz Singer
Carol cut her teeth on open mic nights in London at the Spice of Life, The Polish Club, the Nelson and Windsor Castle Pubs and the Vortex Jazz Club, where she gave show cases with great musicians: Bob Stuckey, Joe Stilgoe, Gabriel Keen, Simon Wallace, Steve Loder and more.
She has studied with outstanding vocal artistes including Anita Wardell and Ben Cox, and most recently with the glorious Emilia Martenssen, and throughout her journey she has worked with the wonderful, inspiring singer and educator Brigitte Beraha. Carol also takes much inspiration from the greats: Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, Cecile McLoren Salvant, Shirly Horne and Norma Winstone. Her repertoire features many of their songs.
Carol, and her husband, the viola player Ian Jewel, were the driving force behind the annual Belsize Festival (www.belsizefestival.co.uk) which included an evening of Jazz with Carol and Brigitte and the Rob Baron and Barry Green trios. This led her to start “Jazz at the Artigiano” an elegant local Italian restaurant.
In Menorca, where she spends time each year, she has regular gigs with the fine guitarist Pere Arguimbau and the exciting and innovative jazz pianist Suso Gonzalez.
Carol has made recordings with the Christian Vaughan Trio and with Chris Eldred, piano and Loz Garrett, bass and most recently with the pianist Matt Robinson. The latter produced by Emilia Martenssen.
